Session 2b

The Reality of Step One

Read More About Alcoholism – pg. 30

This is Step One – There can be no compromise to this step!

If we are planning to overcome drinking there can be no reservations of any kind, nor any lurking notion that someday we will be immune to alcohol.

Take a few minutes to contemplate all we have read and studied so far…

Ask: “Are you now ready to completely SURRENDER to the reality?”

Accept, and fully concede to your innermost self. Declare to yourself and to others that you are powerless over alcohol – you are an alcoholic!”

You need to be 100% certain on Step One.

If you’re willing to fully concede, without reservation, you are an alcoholic, then you can continue with the Steps …

If you are not willing to accept this step as true in your life; you are powerless over alcohol, your life is unmanageable, there is really no point in continuing on with the rest of the steps at this time!

Surrender: Verb 1) To give oneself up to some course. 2) To abandon, or relinquish. 3) To yield in favor of another. 4) To give oneself into the power of another. Noun 1) The act or instance of surrendering. 2) The deed by which a legal surrendering is made.

Fully: Adverb – 1) To the greatest degree or extent; totally; entirely.

Concede: Verb – 1) To acknowledge (often reluctantly) something as being true, just, or proper. 2) To acknowledge before it is officially established – to concede a chess match. 3) To yield or surrender; admit defeat: yield to the obvious circumstances.

“We think having faith means being convinced God exists in the same way we are convinced a chair exists. People who cannot be completely convinced of God’s existence think faith is impossible for them. Not so. People who doubt can have great faith because faith is something you do, not something you think. In fact, the greater your doubt the more heroic your faith.” – Gordon Atkinson

Step One

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.
